Teaching Assistant: Level 1

A level one teaching assistant will:

  • Assist the teacher with lesson preparation
  •  Provide support to the teacher in managing the classroom
  • Help students understand course concepts and improve their skills.

to level 2

Complete a level 2 course e.g. TQUK Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2

Teaching Assistant:
Level 2

A level  two teaching assistant will:

  • Complete level 1 tasks

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for students, helping to answer questions and resolve issues 
  • Participate in the planning and organisation of the lesson

To progress
to level 3

Complete a Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning

Teaching Assistant: Level 3

A level three teaching assistant will:

  • Complete level 1 and 2 tasks
  • Assist students on a one-to-one basis
  • Provide feedback to pupils on their progress
  • Plan and assess

To progress
to level 4

Complete a Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants

Teaching Assistant: Level 4

A level  two teaching assistant will:

  • Complete level 2 & 3 tasks 

  • Assist in planning lessons and preparing teaching materials 
  • Teach classes and cover unplaned absences 
  • Assess, record and report on individual student progress
  • Supervise other TA’s and support staff

Progression

Being a Teaching Assistant is an excellent springboard towards other roles within the education sector. Many teaching assistants are eager to become a teacher. However, there are numerous opportunities in the sector that extend beyond classroom work.

Beyond teaching assistant career progression,  you could train to work as a private tutor, an assessor, in educational research and as an examinations officer. With a proactive approach to career progression, there is a vast array of opportunities.
