Trauma-Informed Practice – Survival Strategies & Trauma Informed Classrooms

Student rasiing hand in classroom

In today’s episode, we look at ‘Survival Strategies and Trauma Informed Classrooms’.

This series of podcasts seeks to support everybody working in the schools sector to gain an understanding of what we mean by Trauma-informed practice, to understand what good practice in this area looks like and to share practical strategies that can really make a difference. We will consider the best available evidence from the fields of psychology, education research and the health and care sector to help us refine our approaches within the classroom.

In this week’s episode we discuss ‘Survival strategies and trauma informed classrooms’. For children who have experienced trauma, learning can be a big struggle. Often students are misdiagnosed with anxiety, behaviour disorders or attention disorders, rather than understanding the trauma that’s driving those symptoms and reactions.

A trauma-informed classroom recognises that when a child misbehaves or acts out in class or just simply won’t work, their behaviour may have nothing to do with being naughty. In fact, their behaviour may have nothing to do with the teacher or the classroom at all. We consider how we can embrace this approach, whilst still maintaining high standards and expectations in our lessons.
